For a long time now, Netflix has housed popular shows. At first, it had shows that were produced by outside studios for other platforms. Soon though it became known for their own original shows like House of Cards and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

During this time though, Netflix would not release the numbers their shows brought in. They didn’t need to since they weren’t an advertiser driven network. At some point, they decided to start releasing numbers. Certain numbers that make them seem super successful.

Like Birdbox being streamed by more than 40 million subscribers. Or some 20 million people watching their hit show, Stranger Things within the first seven days of release.

The Witcher’s Numbers

According to Parrot Analytics, in the first 10 days of it’s release, The Witcher commanded a hefty 127 million expressions. These are impressive numbers for any show. But when compared to The Mandalorian’s numbers, it commanded 115 million expressions during it’s own run on Disney+.

While these all seem impressive, there are some factors that need to be taken into consideration. First, Netflix is a streaming giant that is available around the globe. While Disney+ is currently only in 6 regions. And second, The Witcher IP only had the TV show come out this year. The Mandalorian is a Star Wars property, which saw the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Netflix Shows

Netflix decided to release some end of the year charts. Their Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston movie, Murder Mystery, was the top streamed movie. Oscar contenders, Marriage Story and The Irishman followed.

There were more surprised on the top 10 TV chart they released:

  1. Stranger Things: Season 3
  2. The Witcher
  3. The Umbrella Academy
  4. Dead to Me
  5. You: Season 2
  6. When They See Us
  7. Unbelievable
  8. Sex Education
  9. 13 Reasons Why: Season 3
  10. Raising Dion

Many were surprised that shows like The Crown or Orange Is The New Black didn’t crack the top 10 at all. The other surprise was that You and The Witcher were so high on the list despite being released so late in the year.

What gives? Netflix cuts a show as watched as long as at least 2 minutes have been played on a subscriber’s account. This includes episodes that start playing after the viewer finishes another show.

There it is. The Witcher has some interesting numbers but is it really the most popular in the world? Probably not. Just the most popular on a service that there are public numbers for.
